Deep Work is Cal Newport’s fifth. Newport’s audience is the business world, but this book has broad appeal to anyone seeking less distraction and more meaning in the world.
“Deep work: Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.”m (3)
Commitment to deep work is a common theme with influential figures – Montaigne, Twain, Jung.
The key is to give your self big chunks of time without interruptions for meaningful work. Fuck Twitter, email, water cooler talk and anything else that produces nothing of lasting value.
The main culprit of distraction is chat, email and social media.
“Shallow work: Non-cognitively demanding, logistical style tasks often performed while distracted. These efforts tend not to create much new value in the world and are easy to replicate.” (6) This blog might be an example of this idea.
